About Trecan Snowmelters

Trecan Snowmelters do not use salt, are more fuel-efficient than trucking the snow away, and are environmentally friendly.  Snowmelters reduce the amount of space that would normally be filled with snow piles left behind after plowing.  As fuel and labor costs rise, dump sites decrease, and environmental issues become more prominent and traditional load-haul-dump snow removal is less attractive.  Salt is costly and is one of the largest pollutants in traditional snow removal, corroding vehicles and buildings and harming roadside vegetation and other environmental issues.

Snow is melted through a burner system. This process results in excellent mixing and agitation, and produces thermal efficiencies of close to 100%.

• Average lifespan of a Trecan Snowmelter is 25 years
• Snowmelters run on furnace oil (#2 oil) or diesel, #1 oil, and certain types of jet fuel.  They do not run on gasoline.
• Typically, one ton of snow requires 1.5 gallons of diesel (heat energy) to melt.
• The water leaving the Snowmelter is usually cleaner than the snow entering the machine.
• Melt water can be discharged to either storm or sanitary sewer, depending on the customer and local regulations. 

• There is approximately 240 gallons of water generated per 1 short ton of snow melted.

• Most of the sediment (typically sand or grit) is trapped in the Snowmelter melting tank. If the sediment is light or fine enough to stay in suspension in the water, then this sediment can leave with the water.  The heavier sediment is picked up by the city street-sweeping vehicles or the vacuum trucks that clean out the storm sewers.
• The portable Snowmelter melting tank walls and floor are typically 3/16 to 1/4 inch steel plate stiffened with HSS members.
• With the standard noise suppression package option, people working outside the Snowmelter can quite comfortably talk to each other.
• To figure out what size Snowmelter you will need and how many hours it should take to melt the snow:
  {Depth of snow (inches) X Area to clear (sq.ft.)} /4000 = Tons of snow
  Next, divide the tons by the size of the Snowmelter to calculate how many hours it will take to melt the snow.
